As with most behaviors, head shaking is a normal part of your pet’s life. But when excessive it can be associated with inflammation or infection of the ears. If you think your pet is shaking their head excessively look to see if you see any redness along the ear flaps (pinna), odor or discharge from the ears. Like people, dogs can also get foreign bodies (grass awns, etc.) and ear tumors that can cause discomfort and secondary infection.
A thorough ear exam by a veterinarian is required to determine which causes are most likely in your pet. Veterinary dermatologists have increased expertise in the treatment and management of severe or chronic ear disease.
