PAPULES, PUSTULES, OR PIMPLES
Boxer with rash due to Staphylococcus (Pyoderma)Red bumps on the surface of pet’s skin are most commonly due to bacterial skin infection. When they contain visible pus they are called pustules but if no pus is present they are termed papules. In people we often call these lesions pimples and associate them with acne.
In dogs and cats, Staphylococcus is the most common cause of bacterial skin infections (termed “pyoderma”). In dogs, these infections can be recurrent- in some cases recurring within weeks to months of previous treatment.
In cases of recurrent infection, evaluation by a veterinary dermatologist to determine the underlying cause(s) and to develop a topical therapy program to help prevent recurrence is recommended.
