FLAKY OR SCALY SKIN
Severe scaling of ear in dog with Sebaceous AdenitisFlaky skin (what we often call dandruff in people) can occur from a variety of causes. When mild, it can be an indication of dry skin alone (many pet owners see it occur in the winter months). It can occur as a secondary sign in patients with itch – (allergies, parasites or infection- see picture) or as a primary sign in some skin diseases (primary seborrhea, sebaceous adenitis, ichthyosis). Because so many skin diseases look alike, evaluation by a veterinary dermatologist or a veterinarian is recommended.
- Allergic skin disease (Environmental, Food, Flea)
- Bacterial infection (Pyoderma) or Yeast infection (Malassezia dermatitis)
- Sebaceous adenitis
- Follicular dysplasia
